Frederic went off to work the next morning but not before warning Cassandra that she was to start accepting callers. She now knew that if he gave an order, he meant it. She dreaded the arrival of callers that day. Whoever comes calling, please let it be someone who is not stuck up or a gossip, she prayed.

To her delight, when the Butler bowed with his tray of calling cards, there were only two – from her dear friends Nanette and Paulette. Cassandra was thrilled, they were the least snobbish girls in the world and would probably think her home was wonderful and even if they didn’t, they’d never say so.

Helmut actually appeared pleased when she gave him the go ahead to admit the callers. Soon the girls were standing in her presence and the three of them gathered each other into a group hug and squealed, hopping up and down. Cassandra wiped away a tear; she’d forgotten how wonderful it was to see familiar faces, especially those two dear ones.

“Dearest Cassandra,” Nanette smiled as she and her sister Paulette wiped away tears. “You married so quickly and then disappeared off the face of the earth. Finally your mother told us where you were staying. Is this your new home?”

“It’s our London home. My husband... we... also have a large estate in Germany.”

“Quite impressive for a second home, I’d say.” Paulette said, looking around in awe. Cassandra smiled at her, she knew the girls would like her home. She proudly gave them the grand tour. When they returned to the parlor, the butler was setting an elaborate tea service. Evidently Cook had also been pleased that the mistress had callers and had quickly and skillfully put together a lovely tea. There was a tri-level platter filled with little sandwiches and petit fours and a platter of fresh fruit and cheeses, as well as fresh scones and marmalade. Cook had provided both tea and coffee, knowing her mistresses’ fondness for the drink. After the servants had left them alone, Paulette began, “And how do you like keeping your own household?”

“My husband was a bachelor for a very long time,” Cassandra smiled in response. ”The house pretty much runs itself.”

Nanette asked, “So who did you end up marrying, this Baron Von Dresden? Was he at the ball? None of us had ever heard of him.

“Do you remember The Mystery Man?” Cassandra asked.

Nanette grew quiet as her eyes opened wide. “That’s Baron Von Dresden? The one with the stunning eyes? Why Cassandra, he’s the only man you even mentioned that night and you pointed him out to me twice. How very amazing that you ended up with him, of all people!”

Paulette asked, “Was he the only man who caught your eye that night?”

“Well, yes, I guess so,” Cassandra admitted, nodding thoughtfully.

“Perhaps you would have found your way to each other even without your father’s help.” Paulette smiled. She was a great believer in pre-destiny and soul mates.

Nanette was still filled with wonder at the coincidence.
